Fermented Wheat Germ Extract Studies and Clinical Trials

Studies in Review

Backed by 40 plus clinical studies, and trials, fermented wheat germ extract is the most researched and potent supplement available for cancer patients. During the fermentation of wheat germ, quinones are released by yeast glycosidases. The following fermented wheat germ extract study quotes: “Based on the hypothesis that quinones are “immunostimulatory”, Szent-Györgyi produced a dried extract of wheat germ fermented by Saccharomyces cerevisiae.”

The extract has been standardized to 2, 6-dimethoxy benzoquinone content. It is the extraction of only the most crucial compounds for fighting cancer’s ability to fuel itself.  2, 6-dimethoxy benzoquinone, [is one of these precious compounds], which helps in exerting biological effects on the body. Research shows that fermented wheat germ extract reduces arthritis pain, inflammation, and fights tumor growth.

At Diatom Nutrients, we always encourage you to educate yourself, do your own research, and always consult with your doctor before taking any dietary supplement. To assist you with your research, we have gathered the following fermented wheat germ extract studies and clinical trials. Each listed diagnosis provides a link to the corresponding study; keep reading, and stay healthy.

Colorectal Cancer

The following in vivo study proved fermented wheat germ extract to be efficient in the treatment of colorectal cancer. 12 out of 30 patients being treated with the standard therapy following a major surgery, were given fermented wheat germ extract. As a result, after a 9-month long administration, none of the 12 patients developed new distant metastases. On the contrary, 14 out of 18 people who didn’t take fermented wheat germ extract along with their treatment, developed new distant metastases.

In addition, 17 out of 34 patients undergoing chemotherapy following a major operation, were given fermented wheat germ extract. As a result, those taking fermented wheat germ extract improved their survival rate.

Furthermore, 66 out of 170 colorectal cancer patients undergoing chemo/radiotherapy, took fermented wheat germ extract for the study purposes. As a result:

FWGE GroupNon-FWGE Group
new recurrences3.00%17.30%
new metastases7.60%23.10%
deaths12.10%31.70%
progression-related events in total16.70%42.30%

This 9-month study, observed 20 colorectal patients that underwent a curative surgery, and either received no other therapy or adjuvant chemotherapy. 12 of them were taking fermented wheat germ extract, in addition to their chemo or alone. As a result, none of 12 patients developed new metastases, while several metastases occurred in the control group.

Skin Melanoma Cancer

This clinical trial, conducted in Russia, observed the efficacy of adjuvant chemotherapy on survival parameters of high-risk melanoma patients. After a 7-year-long follow-up period, it concluded that the progression-free survival rate was higher in those taking fermented wheat germ extract - 55.8 months, versus 29.9 months in the control group. Overall survival rate was also higher in fwge group - 66.2 months, versus 44.7 months in the control group.

Colon Cancer

The following study was conducted on a 100 4-week-old inbred male rats. All animals were divided into 4 groups:

  • Group 1: 10 mice received no colon carcinogenesis and no treatment.

  • Group 2: 48 mice have been induced with colon carcinogenesis two weeks after the study had begun, but received no treatment.

  • Group 3: 32 mice were given fermented wheat germ extract 2-weeks before been induced with colon carcinogenesis, and continuously been given fermented wheat germ extract thereafter.

  • Group 4: 10 mice were given basal diet and fermented wheat germ extract, but no carcinogen was applied.

The study continued for 32 weeks, and at the end all mice were exsanguinated, and complete autopsy was performed. During the experiment several rats died, but none because of the cancer tumors.

As a result, group 1 and 4 developed no tumors. 83% of mice in group 2 developed colonic tumors; while in group 3, that was given fwge, only 44.8% of mice developed colonic tumors. The average number of colonic tumors has also been significantly decreased in group 3 than in group 2. Thus, the study concluded that the fermented wheat germ extract could inhibit the initiation phase of colonic carcinogenesis.

Oral Cancer

Oral Surgery and Dental Clinic of Semmelweis University in Budapest, Hungary performed a clinical study, to find out whether fermented wheat germ extract together with the supportive therapy of stage II and III tumorous oral cavity cancer would have any effect. 45 patients participated; 23 received fermented wheat germ extract, and 22 patients did not.

At the beginning of the study, fermented wheat germ extract group had more tumor recurrences than the control group. Both groups were treated with chemo or radiotherapy.

The study concluded after one year, and found that the patients continuously taking fwge, significantly decreased the progression of cancer. Only 4.3% in fwge group developed new metastasis, and in 8.7% the cancer progressed. Whereas in the control group, 22.7% developed new metastasis, and the disease continued to worsen in 77.3%.

Survival Rate % After 5 Years

After a 5-year follow-up, 17 patients of fwge group were alive, while only 10 patients of the control group were alive. The researchers suggest that fermented wheat germ extract in combination with standard treatment can help slow the progression of cancer, and increase the survival rate in oral cancer patients.

Larynx and Pharynx Tumorous Cancers

In 1999, the Ear, Nose and Throat Clinic of Semmelweis University in Budapest, Hungary started its observation-based clinical study. The study included 50 patients, primarily with larynx- and pharynx tumors, as well as, those suffering from bone, salivary gland and other soft tissues tumors. Cancer patients took fermented wheat germ extract daily in combination with their oncological treatments, some of which included radio- and chemotherapy.

Results:  The three-year-long study stated that FWGE:

  • increased the therapeutic effects of both chemo- and radio-therapy

  • significantly reduced radio- and chemotherapy side effects (patients improved their appetite, regained their health, and physical strength)

  • fermented wheat germ extract did not cause any side effects

Rheumatoid Arthritis

The following open-label clinical study involved 15 Rheumatoid Arthritis female patients. All patients continued DMARD and steroid therapies plus took fermented wheat germ extract. The patients’ conditions were evaluated after 6 and 12 months. The Ritchie joint count index, the Health Assessment Questionnaire, and the assessment of morning stiffness, all showed significant improvements. About 50% of patients could reduce their dosages of steroids. No fermented wheat germ extract side effects were reported. Thus, taking fwge together with the RA treatment is highly beneficial.

Chemo Side Effects

Several fermented wheat germ extract studies and trials found that fwge can prevent cancer from spreading to other healthy body parts by stimulating the immune system, starving cancer cells of their nutrition, and increasing the effects of antioxidants.

Due to its natural anti-tumor, anticancer, antioxidants, and antibacterial properties, fermented wheat germ extract is effective in relieving the following common chemotherapy side effects:

Chemo Side Effects FWGE Helps Relieve
anemiainfection
chemo brainfatigue
constipationvomiting
loss of appetitenausea
sexual effectsmood stability
